What is UMEL?

Understanding, Measurement, Evaluation, and Learning (UMEL) is a framework for gathering the right information to ensure that our work is creating change. It helps us see what's working, what needs tweaking, and how we can make the biggest difference.

Learn about UMEL

Learn more about UMEL through this yarn captured between Haley and Skye. UMEL in this discussion is framed around Justice Reinvestment. The development of this yarn was supported through a partnership between Kowa and Ninti One.

Understanding

We start by yarning with Communities, listening to stories, and understanding local needs and aspirations.

Measurement

We track our work, like checking a map to ensure we're on the right path. We collect routine information to see what is changing as a result of the impact work.

Evaluation

We take a good look at what we've done and figure out how things are changing because of our work. We answer any big questions we might hold about if things were done the right way and are achieving the right results.

Learning

We gather, share and use what we've learned along the way to make our program and ways of working even better.

UMEL isn't just about numbers and reports; it's about making sure the right voices are heard, the right data is collected, that insights guide changes in program adn practice and that we're making a real difference in Communities. It's about working together, learning together, and celebrating our successes.
